How to tell if a conditioner has protein in it ?

I wish protein conditioner labels would just say "protein conditioner" ! But most of the time they don't. The word "protein" may not even appear on the ingredients list.

Moisture conditioners and protein conditioners are two different hair treatments, they work in different ways, so it's important to know what it is that you are using.

How to tell whether a conditioner has protein in it ?

Scan the ingredients list for these words:
  • Amino acids
  • Silk
  • Wheat
  • Hydrolized
  • Milk
  • Egg
  • Keratin
  • Collagen
Also, if a conditioner says "repair" or "strengthening", then chances are it's a protein shampoo.

Tips & warnings:

  • Not everyone's hair likes protein. Some hair drinks it up, some needs it once in a while, some just hates it. See what works for you. Also, read this excellent article about protein overdose *link*
  • Do this test to see if your hair needs protein.
  • Protein leaves hair crunchy and brittle, so you need to follow it up with a moisture treatment.
