Bra Band Tightening Tutorial, Using Elastic

Simply shortening the band completely changes the fit of the bra because then the band is always very stretched. Try stretching a bra band: the underwires get bent apart, and this flattens the cup. The underwire doesn´t lie flat on the chest anymore, often the ends dig in and the middle stays away from the ribcage. (like this).

I have already shared a simple tutorial on sewing over the bra band to prevent it from stretching. Today I want to show how to tighten a band even more, using an elastic band. This method is perfect to rescue favourite bras that have stretched with time, or to adjust the fit of a bra that is not available in smaller band sizes. Just remember that this shrinks the band one or two sizes, but it won't make a 28 band out of a 34!
Also, I want to apologise for taking so long to do this! The (lame) reason is that I normally do my mending on my train journey to my university, and somehow I can't imagine sewing a bra and photographing it in public. Finally I managed to do it at home.

Important: please take time to read the post and not just look at the pictures. I have made some mistakes and I explain those in my notes. Also, I am no seamstress, so if you guys have a better way of doing this, let me know!

You will need:
* Pins
* Scissors
* Thread
* Elastic: choose a better quality one, the cheap ones stretch out very quickly. To make this project worth your time do buy the elastic from a store with sewing supplies instead of a supermarket. Also, check  the elastic for scratchyness. If your bra is dark, get a black one. The elastic I bought was slightly too narrow, choose one that is as wide as the one on the bra.

 Cut the elastic to size:
You have to try on the bra and guesstimate this. The elastic has to be shorter than the part of the band you are going to sew it to, but how short depends on how tight you want your band to be. In the photo above you see that in my bra only part of the band was stretchy, so I decided to sew the elastic only to the stretchy part. Also, I did only the bottom part of the band, but if you have a larger bust and need more support, do the top edge of the band as well!

Secure the ends of the elastic:
This step is important because elastic frays a lot. You can't tuck the ends underneath because you'd end up with slightly uncomfortable bumps. I stitched around the ends, but fabric glue would have worked just as well. Update: a great tip from a reader -- to stop the elastic from fraying, light a candle and slightly melt the ends.

Stretch the elastic and pin it to the band:
I pinned the whole thing to the edge of a sofa, but if you have a better idea go with it.

Sew the stretched elastic to the band:   Somewhere I read that you should start in the middle and work your way to the ends. If you have a sewing machine, there is that nice zig-zag stitch, or even better: the mending stitch which is more stable. I used a back stitch, pulling the thread taut all the time.

I experimented around with finding the easiest way to sew... using my foot.

I realised that I have to reverse my back stitch so that the ugly side stays on the inside.

Ta-daa! Not very pretty from the inside...

But looks pretty good from the outside, don't you think?

Hope this is helpful! Also, I beg those of you who actually know how to really properly sew, to share your tips and criticism in the comments!

Thank you so much for this! I have been searching for a great idea like this forever!! Will share this for you for sure!
Thank you so much! I started making frankeinbras the other day, when I left you the comment on the other post, this will be very useful :)
A very useful tutorial! I'm definitely going to try this out!
It couldn't have come at a better time for me: I just got two bra's that expanded about a band size after wearing it for a short time. I'm still learning how to use a sewing machine, so the tip of starting in the middle and working towards the ends is very useful to me!

Though I have a question about the bra in your picture: did you alter the backside of your bra with those to bands going to the closing hook, or was it designed that way?
1 reply · active 696 weeks ago
No, it was designed that way. It's an old Gossard Superboost.
Yay thanks for posting this! I might give it a shot someday. I would indeed use a zig-zag stitch when sewing this with a machine, not least of all because I could make the stitch as wide as the elastic and therefore keep the edges of the elastic flat. But yours does look good, how does it feel when wearing it?

If sewing by hand, you can mimic a zig-zag by sewing a straight stitch in zig-zags across the elastic: straight stitch in one direction, then straight stich in the other.

Thanks for the idea of the stitching zig-zag by hand. I will try that out the next time I have a band to tighten. So far the bra feels comfortable, but I haven't washed it yet -- I hope the elastic doesn't curl away (if it does I'll have to iron it flat).

Wonderful post!! How much do you think that altered your bra down? I'm looking for ways to fit a much smaller ribcage. I'd love to be able to alter down a 32 to a 28. I know its probably not possible. I thought I could use your technique in two different places on both sides of the bra, one closest to the hooks and one closer to the under arm. If not I may try your other technique with just the stitching to keep from stretching.

I was trying to make it one band size smaller, but you could try the 32 to 28. I think it all depend on how stable the underwires are: soft ones will bend when the band is tighter, pulling the cup out of shape; whereas stable ones won't. I'd love it if you share photos if you are successful.

You might also have to move the straps a bit! But hopefully you can pull it off, best of luck :> Also; Great post Eternal*Voyageur , I might try it with my CK Thrill me :>

That's a great idea -- moving the straps I mean.

This is a great idea! I have a very stretchy 28 back bra which I had my mum sew extra hooks onto (I should be wearing a 26 back) and it's still not quite tight enough. Might give this a try!
There is finally a solution ladies! Please go to this link and like our page and take short survey. Thank you!

I'm glad to know I'm not the only person who employs their foot to sew!
I would recommend the Mending stitch, not zig-zag since it's not as stable...unless you're doing a very narrow width and do so both on the inside top with right sides together, and then on the outside just past the first stitching after flipping the elastic right side out (to the inside). Panache Cleo uses this latter method on their bras, though with all that compression, stretching and thread it does allow the band to wear out faster since the elastic has more sewn through it. The mending stitch looks just like the zig-zag except that it has straight stitches within it.

Thanks so much for this tip! I was hoping that someone who can actually sew would chime in.

Hi! I'm kinda new to your beautiful blog and to the right bra sizes. I used to wear 75 B (EU) untill I realised that it's not a comfortable bra, having the underbust measurement 67 cm with the empty lungs and the bust measurement 86-87 cm. So i searched for a new one with a 60-65 band here in my country (Romania). Unfortunately, the smallest available band number is 70 and I have purchased a 70C bra. The problem is that the band stretches a lot and i would like to tighten it as much as it can be. At rest, it measures 65 cm and when it's stretched to the maximum 89-90cm(but if you pull hard)! What tightening technique would you recommend me, please? I was thinking at the ribbon one, but I didn't understand how long should it be if i want to tighten it a lot..Thank you very much and sorry for my English! (I also want to do this, because I don't have the possibility to buy online in this moment and I like a lot this bra, the cups are perfect)
Hello Anna, I'd recommend the elastic band method, it is best if you want to tighten the band a lot. Hope it works for you!
Thank you !! I'm going to try it and I will let you know the result!
P.S. I'm glad that you share so much information, because nobody had told me before how a bra should be.
Hi,I'm back! I ended up tightening other bra that I have, a soft one ( not the one I was telling about in the previous comment). The size was 70C too, but the band needed to be shorter with 3-4cm , for becoming snug (initial measurement at rest : about 67 cm ). I want to say that it's awesome! The cup became just a little ( a few mm) wider, maybe because of flexible wires, which is good because the they were staying at the 'borderline' of the breast tissue and the rest of the body. Although this happened, I don't find that the shape/size of the cup has been altered. I will try with other bras too, because I managed to get one from Debenhams ( from someone who sold it on a local site) but it's the same size, better quality, yay! I'm pretty impressed with it. Thank you for what you're doing on your blog, it's really helpful!

This is great! Thank you!
I just purchased a new bathing suit online and when I received it, noticed that the cup was a bit bigger than my actual breasts, and the suit was not snug at the top, but it is the smallest size possible. The suit looks great but I feel it needs a little bit of an adjustment to make it fit perfectly. However, I AM NOT A SEAMSTRESS and do not own a sewing machine...just needle and thread.
How can I use this technique to tighten the whole top of my bathing suit (its a one piece) so the cup does't look like its "floating" on my body?
Thanks in advance for your tips!!!

I'm so sorry but I don't know much about sewing either... maybe try a sewing forum?
Hi again! I am the girl with the very stretchy bra from above. I finally finished to alter the initial bra I was talking about, and I'm writing now this comment just to say that I did a combined version. In the lower part of band, I sewed a ribbon, just to become really unstretchy and to have about 67 cm measurement and in the upper section, even though I don't have large breasts, I put elastic which is with 2 cm shorter than the upper section at rest( I think it's individual here). The reson why I did this is just because I feel the bra well-balanced, it feels nicer to me, that's just a new thing that I found and I like! I think it fits me perfectly now!

Seriously, you saved 6 absolutely gorgeous, like new bras that the band was just a wee bit loose after they stretched out. I don't know why this never occurred to me. I think that although I sew almost everything else, lingerie is so intimidating. Very nice postings thanks so much.

The bras had different constructions so I used a couple of your methods in the end, the sewing the straight stitch, adding ribbon, and adding elastic. I did not have to move the straps but really was only taking them down from a 36 to a 34 (US sizes) It worked very well.
Ooh your a bra saver I hoping you can save me a fortune , but before I get to work on mine I wonder do you no any reason why this wouldn't work on a strapless bra and how do you think I could work around the strip that help hold the bra in place ? i want to take it from a 36 to a 32 ? xx
So helpful! Thanks so much!
Hi, did you cut the sides of your bra and sew those triangle bands? If so, do you have a blog post about it? Thanks!
1 reply · active 330 weeks ago
No, the bras was already like that. I didn't cut anything.
How did it look after washing the bra? Did it hold up?
1 reply · active 307 weeks ago
Yes it did! I wore it for quite a bit until my size changed.
I have a swimsuit top with elastic around the bottom of the bra that has stretched out due to age and whatnot. Could I use this to replace the elastic and give it new life??

Definitely! Let me know how it worked.
